PRODUCER CALL OUT
This is a partially paid call out for a producer. We wanted to find a long term collaborator who can help us realise a lot of exciting ambitions, ideas and production models for our project HALF MAN || HALF BULL, along with any satellite, parallel or interlinked projects that come with this.
There is more info about us, the project, and what we think we’re looking for below. But first let’s start with what we’re expecting from you and what we can offer in this process.
This is three stage application process.
STAGE ONE - AN OPEN CALL OUT
We would like you to send us a 3-5 minute video telling us about what you do, the work you make, the skills you have, and what excites you. We want to know about why you produce theatre and performance. We want to know what your ambitions are. We want to know about what makes you care about story and performance. And we want to know what you think a producer’s job is, or, perhaps more importantly, what you think your job could or should be as a producer.
This stage is not paid. But we want it to be easy. A video of you talking about you. That’s all we want. If you want to send us any links, that’s fine too. But we don’t want a covering letter, a job application, or anything that takes you much time to prepare.
STAGE TWO - INTERVIEWS
We will invite a small number of people to come and talk with us (via zoom) for 30 minutes. We’ll tell you about what we’re up to, what we do, where we think we’re headed.
We’d then ask you to spend up to 2hr30 over the following few days thinking, researching, and imagining how you can help us get to where we want to go. We’d want to know what our work would look like with you at the helm with us. We want you to think big, and we’d want to know how you’d achieve that.
We’d ask you to then come and talk to us (via zoom) for an hour to talk through those ideas, models and how your experience and practise helps us amplify and develop our work.
This stage will be paid at £11 per hour for a total of 4 hours of work (30min chat / 2hr30 prep / 1hr interview).
STAGE THREE - A TWO WAY TRIAL
We will then invite either two people to work with us for 15 hours over two weeks, or one person to work with us for 30hours over two weeks.
At this point, we’d be looking to really dig in with someone on foundational producing models, on getting to know you, on getting to understand what our work would look like if we were all making it together and where working with you would lead.
We’d be wanting to think big, and to start to understand what building blocks you bring to the table.
This stage will be paid at £11 per hour for 15 hours, if we invite two people to this stage, or 30 hours if we invite one person.
By the end of these three stages, we hope we will have found the perfect person to work with for some time to come. And we also hope the feeling will be mutual.
We hope that everyone will have been fairly paid for their time. If we don’t find the perfect person, or we aren’t your perfect set of artists, then that’s all okay too.
So. Who are we, what do we do, and what do we want to do?
We’re three very long standing friends. We’ve worked together for years on loads of projects. We’re part of the original team behind the immersive production of The Great Gatsby; we’ve retold a series of myths called ORPHEUS, EURYDICE and THE GODS THE GODS THE GODS; we’ve made musicals, site based adventures for families, storytelling work, festivals and folk shows. We don’t make traditional plays. We do make work where the intersection between audience and story is vital. We do make work where physical space plays heavily on the audience experience. We do make work with a big heart and we care very deeply about the audience’s experience from before the story starts to way after it ends. We work with brilliant people who love art, who love story and, most importantly, who love people and playing and imagining new ways of doing new things. We work in the UK and around the world.
HALF MAN || HALF BULL is a double narrative album. We made it over the last year. We wanted to originate a piece of work, made in its correct form, which didn’t ask people to gather together. It’s an audio experience - two albums, twenty original tracks - which retells the myths of Theseus & The Minotaur and Daedalus & Icarus. It arrives through your door in a beautiful listening pack designed by Lydia Denno. If you want to hear it, let us know.
We partnered with some incredible theatres and organisations across the UK and overseas to get the work out to people. All those organisations are friends we’ve made, old and new, and we want to keep working with them.
Now, we’re looking at turning those two narrative albums in to a live show. We have big ideas. We’re trying to imagine a new way to realise this piece of loud, fast, emotional storytelling. We think it’s a mid scale piece. We have some ideas, they’re not finished ideas. We think it’ll exist in the UK and overseas. We think it might exist inside and outside of theatre buildings. We think it has people and community and accessibility in the centre of it with the story and the form. We think we want it to be on the road for 2-3 years in some way. We know it’s a live, gathered experience. We know it’s loud. We know it will have big bass lines, heavy drum beats and hopefully some good opportunity for dancing.
So, we want to hear from you.
We think you’re the type of person who can imagine new producing models.
We think you’re the type of person who is very organised, and has great systems for managing admin amidst art.
We think you’re used to working outside of the traditional models of producing.
We think you probably like site based work, immersive work, gig-led work, music, storytelling, spoken word and festivals.
We think you have a good knowledge of UK touring and international touring.
We think you have good experience and knowledge of raising money and producing in both the subsided and commercial sector.
We think you’ll like working with different theatres and producing partners, and be able to bring those conversations and networks to the table.
We think you probably think out the box.
If you think that might be you, then send us that video.
If you want to get in touch, then you can.
If you want to listen to the album before you send anything, then you can.
If there’s anything else you’re wondering or wanting, then you’re probably right to wonder and to want it, do get in touch.
We realise this was a long read, so thanks for reading.
Send us your Stage 1 videos to info@halfmanhalfbull.com , no more than 5minutes.
Please put ‘[Your Name] Producer Application’ in the subject of the email.
Thanks, and we’ll look forward to hearing from you soon.
